OddS

OddS was going to be our ticket to stardom in Los Angeles. The concept was that of a true multimedia duo. From the beginning we planned songs and visuals together (this was before MTV). Our grand vision was that we could do everything ourselves: the cover art, the videos, all the instruments, etc. The MTV exposure brought us close enough to actual success that the duo violently blew apart.

DANGEROUS MAN
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: Digital Sound, Pasadena, CA

Written with Chris through the mails in 1977 in Buena Park, CA. It was chosen later to be our “big hit” that we would use to introduce ourselves to the record companies. While none were interested, the video ended up on MTV in 1981.

DISCO VOLANTE
(Lee - Wrege)
Studio: Digital Sound, Pasadena, CA
The ‘B’ side of our big hit. It’s a song about flying saucers with only six words: “flying saucer” in three different languages. MTV thought it was a disco song because of the title and wouldn’t schedule it.

MOONBURN
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: Lucky Dog, Venice, CA
I was always trying to get Chris to write commercially acceptable lyrics. This is one of his love songs.

MONEY MACHINE
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: home studio
Another “through the mails” song. Every once in awhile I’d get a package of lyrics from Chris and I’d match them up with song fragments I was working on.

HELL TO PAY
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: home studio
One of Chris’ story songs. I was interested in seeing if I could write an entire song with just two chords in it.

GETTING IT OVER WITH
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: home studio – Sherman Oaks, CA
My buddy Richard Whitley was shopping a movie script around the Hollywood studios about a girl’s adventure with losing her virginity. Chris and I recycled a lot of “Harp of Hercules” for it.

QUITE TYPE
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: Lucky Dog, Venice, CA
I always considered this one mildly misogynistic bordering on parody. Steve Stone helped make it a kick-ass rocker with his driving bass lines.

POWER OF PRAYER
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: Lucky Dog, Venice, CA
This was part of a thirty-minute television show concept Chris and I were working on called, "In the Beginning," which was to be a parody of religious television shows and faith healers.

THE ELECTRICIAN
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: home studio - Yorba Linda, CA & PIX Productions, Irvine, CA
A musical complaint about capital punishment written through the mails while Chris was still back in Louisville, KY..

IN THE BEGINNING
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: Lucky Dog, Venice, CA
Title song of aforementioned 30 minute teevee show about faith healers. It was also vaguely biographical in that it dealt with the songwriting partnership and how we were about to make it really really big.

PARAPSYCHO ROCK
(Lee)
Studio: Watermark, North Hollywood
This is one of Chris’ tunes. I played bass on it. It has the dubious honor of being one of the handful of songs that Jim Cook produced.

GET SERIOUS
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: Lucky Dog, Venice, CA
By this point I think I’d used that synthesizer line about three times. It was my fall-back melody apparently.

SALADIN
(Wrege - Lee)
Studio: home studio – Buena Park, CA
I was taking classical guitar lessons when I first got to Los Angeles and the music for this turned into a Father’s Day present (original title: “Song for My Father”). I got some incomprehensible (to me, anyway) lyrics in the mail from Chris and put this together.
